Survey Department was formed in May 1952 as one of the agencies under the  government of Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang Dipertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam, which is now as one of the department under the Ministry of Development.

Before 1952 the Department of District Office was the one that handles the administration and adjustment of land surveying. As one of the oldest government department in this country, Survey Department during that time was located at Jalan James Pearce, Brunei Town (now known as Bandar Seri Begawan), At that time Survey Department has only 20 staffs which include a few officer under loan from oversea.

In 1953 Survey Department moved to government main office which is known as Secretariate Building situated at Jalan Elizabeth II , by which the main task of Survey Department is only to carried out the Cadastral Surveying for Deposit land, resurveying and land title diagram.

In 1959 Survey department moves a step further with the launching of the Maps making which is developed and maintained by the survey department officer with the help of Mapping Center from oversea.

With the fast progress of Survey Department at that time, in 1969 once again Survey Department moved to temporary building at Jalan Kumbang Pasang, which provides bigger working space for surveying and mapping.

In 1985 Survey Department moved to Public Work Department building situated at
Berakas Old Airport. The manpower has increased from 20 in 1950's to 486 staffs. This increased due to the development, needs, progress and speedy country development. With the recruitment of new staff with vast knowledge and experience has great impact to development and changes at Survey Department.

As the responsibility of Survey Department become more apparent in the fields of Cadastral surveying, deposit land, resurveying and production of land title, districts office was formed in each Districts with all the section and unit. At the same time Mapping section has progress with the production of several type of maps. Progress also achieved in the widespread used of computers at all section and unit in Survey Department.

The development can be visualized with the introduction and modern technology being used in conjunction with fast development of Information Technology. Survey Department has improved in job production and quality and improvement in land surveying and mapping to meets public and country needs.
